Your first bareboat charter will feel, at multiple points, like you have no idea what you’re doing. This is correct. It’s also fine – every competent sailing skipper has a first bareboat somewhere in their history, usually involving at least one docking incident and a moment where the engine died at the worst possible time.

What separates the people who have a great trip from the ones who have a disaster is mostly preparation. Here’s the preparation that actually matters.

Greece vs Croatia: Choose Your Region Wisely

For a first bareboat, the Greek Ionian Islands are the superior choice. The Adriatic bora – a violent katabatic wind that can go from 0 to 40 knots in under an hour – has ended more than a few first-timer holidays early. The Ionian has predictable afternoon breezes (the maestro), sheltered bays, and marinas spaced 10-15nm apart. You’re rarely in trouble for long.

Croatia is beautiful and worth doing after you have a charter or two under your belt. The BVI (British Virgin Virgins) is another excellent first-timer destination if you’re coming from the US – flat water, reliable tradewinds, and the Sir Francis Drake Channel is one of the world’s great day-sailing grounds.

The Qualification Question

Most charter companies in Greece and Croatia accept an ICC (International Certificate of Competency) or equivalent national qualification (RYA Day Skipper, ASA 104, etc.). Some operators – particularly smaller family-run companies on the Greek islands – will accept a sailing CV and a credible-looking crew. This is getting less common as the industry professionalises.

If you’re qualified but rusty, seriously consider booking a skipper for the first day. Most operators offer this for โ‚ฌ150-250. You learn the boat, the VHF procedures, the fuel fill-up logistics, and the marina approach in the first 24 hours when someone experienced is watching. The money is worth it.

Provisioning: Do It Properly on Day One

The single biggest logistical mistake first-timers make: leaving the base marina underprovided. Large supermarkets are at the charter base. Island shops are expensive, have limited stock, and close for three hours in the afternoon. Buy everything – water, beer, food for 7 days, sunscreen, washing-up liquid, spices, coffee – before you leave the dock.

Budget โ‚ฌ80-120 per person for provisions for a week if you’re eating primarily on the boat.

Boat cost: โ‚ฌ2,800-4,500 depending on season and boat age. Security deposit (insurable via Pantaenius or similar): โ‚ฌ3,000-5,000 refundable. Marina fees: โ‚ฌ30-80/night. Diesel: โ‚ฌ150-250. Provisions: โ‚ฌ500-700 total. Per person cost: roughly โ‚ฌ1,000-1,400 depending on how much you eat out.

The Docking Problem

Mediterranean mooring – stern-to, sometimes called Med mooring – will stress you out the first time. You drop an anchor off the bow, then reverse slowly toward the quay wall, put out fenders, and step off the stern. In a busy marina in 15 knots of breeze with an audience, this feels impossible. It isn’t. Practice in an empty area of the marina first. Go slowly. The prop walk (the boat’s tendency to pull sideways when reversing) is predictable once you’ve done it twice.

The trip is worth every stressful moment of planning. Cast off properly and the rest is just sailing.
